Our roasters
A Barcelona roaster whose story began with a travelling coffee cart in London and developed into one of the city’s specialty coffee references.

The roastery
NOMAD Coffee was founded by Jordi Mestre, who is from Barcelona. The story begins in London in 2011, where Jordi, after two years working in the city’s coffee bars, set up a coffee cart and served at street markets. That nomadic start gave the company its name.
In 2012 and 2013 Jordi won the Spanish National Barista Championship, and in the same period worked as a roaster at Nude in London. In 2014 he returned to Barcelona and opened the NOMAD Coffee Lab, a small bar devoted entirely to coffee, at a time when specialty coffee was still new to the city. Today NOMAD roasts at its headquarters, Cal Nomad, in Poblenou, supplies cafés in Spain and abroad, runs its own training academy, and has been a certified B Corp since 2023.

01
NOMAD’s roasting is light, aiming for clarity while keeping sweetness and balance. Its background in coffee bars and barista competition shows in a practical focus on how a coffee behaves once it is brewed and served.
Sourcing is built on long-term relationships with producers and importers. NOMAD began travelling to origin in 2016, to Costa Rica and Rwanda with the importer Falcon Coffees, and works repeatedly with producers such as Juan Felipe Restrepo in Caldas, Colombia. Since 2021 it has published transparency reports on its purchasing. The coffee range is organised by purpose: Classics for everyday drinking, Specials for more distinctive lots, and a Competition selection.
02
NOMAD’s coffees are light and clear, but generally round and sweet rather than sharp. The range runs from balanced everyday coffees to more expressive special and competition lots, so there is something for a reliable daily cup as well as for something rarer. NOMAD roasts for both filter and espresso.
03
We chose NOMAD because its coffee comes from a roastery shaped by the bar and by teaching. That background shows in how approachable its coffees are, including the more ambitious ones. NOMAD also brings Barcelona’s coffee culture into the TERROIR collection, and a story in which one roastery took an active part in developing its city’s specialty coffee scene.
04
When the Coffee Lab opened in 2014, specialty coffee was still unfamiliar to most people in Barcelona. From early on, NOMAD combined roasting with education. In 2015 it opened its first roastery in Poblenou as a place for public tastings and courses, and in 2022 this work became The Coffee Academy, which offers training for professional baristas, cafés and people brewing at home. NOMAD has supplied Barcelona’s cafés and restaurants for more than a decade, and has been part of how specialty coffee became established in the city.
